You want people who see you for the first time in, oh, 13 years to smile when they see you.

It's nice when that happens.

I know from experience. Experience today at late lunch. I was walking to a fast-food place when a college buddy of mine rode by on a bike. Aaron, formerly of the University of Oregon and its Clark Honors College, like me, and completely at random we run into each on SE 50th a block north of Powell.

He's a teacher now! Teaches high school. He lives in that neighborhood; I'm working in it. We talked for a few minutes (he was impressed that I'd been a newspaper writer-reporter) and continued on our way. Once again, Portland proves to be a big small town.
