Cort, Fatboy, Rick, and a "new direction"

Deposed DJs Cort Webber, Bobby "Fatboy" Roberts, and Rick Emerson, plus The Oregonian's media observer Peter Ames Carlin, spoke on KGW's Live at the Square last night about the firing of the DJs and the future of radio:

It has the quickest, simplest description I've heard yet about what the revamped KUFO is going to be: "More guy, less geek." Which puts me in mind of a radio station here in Portland earlier this decade with the slogan "Guy Talk!" The one good thing about that station (for me, at least) was that it played The Don & Mike Show in Portland, but overall the station felt seedy. Unfair comparison: that was a poorly-funded AM station, and KUFO is well-funded and on FM. But I like my media geeks. Honestly, I identify more as a geek than as a guy. (And now I'm flashing on a brutal and hilarious parody Cort and Fatboy once did of just the sort of radio the new KUFO's likely to have.)

Still, life goes on. Even if that includes no longer listening to KUFO, which I really just listened to for the DJs who are no longer there.

Also, Mike Russell wrote an appreciation of the DJs and the outpouring of support for them since Friday.

Added: Peter Ames Carlin's Oregonian column about the shake-up.
