Incredible. I miss the storms out west.

So do I.

;-)

Portland's in this little cell of usually-pretty-moderate weather; the Cascades on the east and the Coast Range on the west tend to block really big blows. There are exceptions: 1962's 1962 Columbus Day Storm that went straight north through western Oregon and just SMACKED Portland and the rest of the Willamette Valley. I'm lucky Dad didn't get crushed by a tree that day. Seriously.

But we also don't have sandstorms. I've dealt with sandstorms back in Hermiston, in northeast Oregon's semi-desert; I hope never to deal with them again.

That area is just a touch surreal in a wonderful way. I've been to Devil's Tower with my parents during a cross-country trip back in 1994. We approached the area from the southeast early one morning. We came to a curve and got our first good look at the land below, with that monolith sticking hundreds of feet out of it. We saw the early-morning glow. We also saw the skid marks of cars going slightly off the road because lots of people got so distracted by the view.

Oh, yeah: there are many cool views around Devil's Tower.
