Portland radio has been especially rattled this past year, but out of the chaos is coming something cool. Broadcasting smartass Rick Emerson, part of Alpha Broadcasting's purge of radio talent last October, wanted to find a way back to radio. Not only has he found it, he's taking Dawn Taylor, coffeeinhell herself, along with him.
Not only is Dawn still hosting her weekly online radio show Ham-Fisted Radio, and not only is Rick still hosting his Sunday-morning talk show Outlook Portland, they have merged their talents for TWO online radio shows that will debut Monday, June 21st. They talked about their plans on yesterday's episode of The Cort and Fatboy Show. Want a sense of why I'm a fan of both Rick and Dawn? Listen to that hour, or at least part of that hour. (That Rick invokes Don Geronimo and Mike O'Meara is, to me, just icing on the cake.)
From noon to 1:00 on PDX.fm will be The Legion of News, with Dawn reading the news and both Rick and Dawn commenting (read: snarking) on it. Then from 1:00 to 2:30 will be a subscribers-only show hosted on Rick's website, Rick Emerson Dot Com (subscription: $6.99 a month), where they'll go more in-depth on whatever the hell they want to talk about. And they're both good talkers.
It makes sense that they're part of the talent pool being gathered by PDX.fm. The site is aggressively working to make local radio more relevant, more idiosyncratic, and more enjoyable, and doing it online to create a different business model so that such radio can still be supported. The people behind the site want to make good radio, and being online means that people all over the place can sample Portland's more idiosyncratic radio broadcasters.
In other words, more people all over the country and even the world can sample these shows and, I hope, become fans. (Rick's fanbase already extends worldwide. Quite a few soldiers in Operation Iraqi Freedom were listening to Rick's podcasts when he was still on terrestrial radio, to sample one part of his audience.) And I hope people do.
The Legion of News and The Rick Emerson Show. Something's going to happen. Something wonderful.
