I feel the earth move under my feet...

Plate tectonics was advanced and developed as a theory for the inner workings of the Earth's crust in the 1950s and 1960s. Continental drift was an earlier theory, upon which plate tectonics as a theory was built, but again: we only figured this out within the past century, which really isn't that long.

I'm telling you this to tell you this: At one time in his college teachings, my three-years-older brother T.J. (University of Virginia, Class of 1993) had a science textbook where his professor told the students that they'd use part of the book, but not all of it. Some parts of this book were still relevant and provable while some parts were out of date. What was out of date? The part that said that continental drift was caused by "a force from the east."
