The band Muse has a new song called "Madness." Besides making me want the band Madness to write a song called "Muse," it's also making me head-bob. I like Muse. Their 2006 album Black Holes and Revelations opens with one of my favorite songs of the last 10 years, seriously: "Take a Bow," which makes me think of Phillip Glass working with Elliott Goldenthal and the guitar orchestra Goldenthal used very loudly in his score to Heat. I love that three guys can make as much melodic noise as they do.
"Madness" is a slow, slow build that's not immediately hook-y pop music, but it gets to me. So far, at least; it's new. Here it is:
I also hear their Queen influence, which makes me want Muse to someday write the music for a science fiction film. Queen's score to Flash Gordon? Awesome. Queen's song work with Michael Kamen on Highlander? Awesome. The video for Muse's "Knights of Cydonia"? Looks like the trailer for a science fiction western. How has a full-on Muse film score not happened yet?
