Soup
by Christopher Walsh
12/12/2016

"Soup" is not an epic word.
Soup is never the food for Hector
Or Ulysses or Aeneas:
Not a food hunted down
(How to hunt a soup?)
Or feasted upon in long halls
Though those mead-halls would
Seem warmer if they held soup.
(Grendel was further enraged
By lack of soup.)
There is no epic way to eat soup.
"Slurp" is not an epic word.
No hero, no villain would
Blow on their spoonful
To ease the liquid heat.
(Nor would any god, though
Gods have no need to cool their soup.)
Soup would only be epic
If an entire ocean Odysseus had to cross
Was suddenly soup.
Sea-monsters would be pacified by
Having all that soup to eat.
Maybe a sea of soup would not be epic.
("Soup" is not an epic word. Still.)
Soup
Works simply.
Soup reaches the corners of your digestion
And fills them.
Touches them.
Moves through them.
Soup
Works humbly.
It works matter-of-factly.
"Soup" does not need to be an epic word.
