Whale fluke

What I wrote for Poppy Z. Brite

You know what happened a year ago. The TV and the papers have been telling us. One of my sources of what post-K life's been like on the Gulf Coast is New Orleans writer Poppy Z. Brite, who graces LJ as docbrite and has been writing the Liquor novels and Rickey and G-Man stories I've been enjoying so much. She and her husband Chris DeBarr had to evacuate their home, and spend six weeks in mid-Mississippi waiting to return. They've been back ever since.

When it wasn't yet clear when Brite and Barr would or even could return, friend and fellow writer Caitlin R. Kiernan (greygirlbeast) organized a CARE package drive. Kiernan asked for toys, books, little "thinking of you" mementos, and postcards. I couldn't match the gift Stephen King sent her (a signed first edition of Misery), but I wrote a postcard. And knowing that Poppy is an avid fan of the Beatles (up to and beyond having a tattoo of John Lennon's self-portrait), I wrote new lyrics for one of their songs:
Set to the tune of "Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite!":
For the benefit of Doctor Brite
The loyal fans, en masse, will write
A postcard blitz!
'Tis meant to show, with much fanfare
That our capactiy to care
Ain't on the fritz!
We recall the laughs and hot man-sex
And smile to know the scribe of this
Is still with us --
You're surviving just as well as Ellison!
Poppy and Chris (husband Chris, not the random-fan Chris writing this journal) are doing their best to keep surviving. This entry is a small attempt to send more good vibes in their direction, as well as in the direction of my LJ friend and fellow Poppy and Caitlin fan aoniedesade, on Mississippi's coast.

It's been a hell of a year. Literally, in many ways. Here's hoping for better.
