Walker on Walker, Part Three

Here is part three of The return of the words of Shirley Walker, the first woman ever to score a major Hollywood studio movie, Memoirs of an Invisible Man. (Turns out Chevy Chase recommended her for the job; he remembered her from conducting Angelo Badalamenti's score to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.) I like how she relates it here:
The first two days of that score, there were a lot of people who had come to visit the scoring stage because they were here to witness this event. I was almost in tears about that. I had to ask somebody why all those people were here, and when they told me it was just incredible. It's because there's a real tradition of oral history in this business. There are so many things that have happened in this business, that will never be written down by anybody, and it's private -- it's for the people who work in this business, and that was their honor to be there and support me in that, and I was just incredibly touched by that...

This is the first score where I can say "This is what Shirley Walker's musical voice is." Now I can show my full sense of adventure and humor, because most of the time you're being asked to do something that's like John Williams or James Newton Howard. But because Memoirs is my breakout project, I don't have to emulate the "hot" style of the time.
And that's right: it's a fun, adventurous, dramatic, stirring score. I have that score CD.

It's true (NOT "its true")!

You Scored an A

You got 10/10 questions correct.

It's pretty obvious that you don't make basic grammatical errors.
If anything, you're annoyed when people make simple mistakes on their blogs.
As far as people with bad grammar go, you know they're only human.
And it's humanity and its current condition that truly disturb you sometimes.

Yay! I got the same score as puppetmaker40!

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Its/it's is an easy rule. It's always, ALWAYS, means either "it is" or "it has" (like when Barenaked Ladies sing "It's been one week since you looked at me..."), so if in a sample sentence (like "I'll go to it's opening") you change the "it's" to "it is" and it doesn't fit, it's "its."

News for those who're keen on Kiernan

Woo hoo!

I am a vocal fan of author Caitlin R. Kiernan (seen in The Land of LJ as greygirlbeast). I'd heard via her journal today that one of her big projects for this year is out in bookstores: her novelization of the Neil Gaiman-Roger Avary-scripted Beowulf. It's out a little early, even. And now I have my copy.

I'm keen on Kiernan. Some of you are also keen on Kiernan. I'm hoping lots more people become keen on Kiernan, thanks to this.

But no, I'm not reading it yet. To quote Christopher Walken as Johnny Smith in The Dead Zone, "Some things are worth waiting for." (He was talking about sex; I'm talking about a Caitlin R. Kiernan novel. Some of my friends would argue it's the same thing.)
