704 Hauser

The next stop on Rick Emerson's video tour of offbeat-yet-iconic New York places: 704 Hauser. Which (I guessed correctly!) was Archie Bunker's house.

(His first stop: what used to be the Copacabana. He's also visited the Apollo.)

Trivia: in the pilot for what became the influential TV show All in the Family, the family wasn't the Bunker family, it was the Justice family. Harlan Ellison saw the pilot back in the early '70s and said Very smart and thoughtful, but it's never going to get on air. I think he didn't mind being wrong about the show's chances.

The Litany Against Trolls

I must not respond.
Trolls are the thread killer.
Trolls are the little dicks that bring total bannination.
I will ignore the trolls.
I will permit them to pass over and through the thread.
And when they have gone past I will turn the browser to see the ignore list.
Where the troll has posted, there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
Word. And I'm sure Frank Herbert would've been amused at this reworking of his words.

Recognizing a stroke

From an e-mail my cousin Amy/Max/"Maximy" Walsh sent me:

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
