Cartoon Chris

You can tell so much about a person by what makes them laugh.

(Which is partly why I won't share the thought I had last night that made me almost collapse laughing. I shared it with one person, through e-mail. Only way I felt safe sharing it.)

Laughter can be a short circuit: it can quickly cut through a lot of your personality's layers and filters. And NOT laughing can be powerful. A few days ago I was waiting at the bus stop after work and this other guy tried to tell me a joke. I didn't hear all of it, but I heard enough to wonder why it was funny. So I just looked at him. He tried again. I kept a neutral face: not about to laugh, but also not about to start dissecting the joke and asking Why is that funny? Because then you look humorless, and I'm very (maybe overly) sensitive to that. So I acted a bit like he was speaking a different language. Which he kind of was. He realized he wasn't reaching me, and went to other subjects. Non-joke-y subjects.

Think about what makes you laugh. Enjoy thinking about what makes you laugh.

Heh. (Hmm. Firefox's pop-up thing shows I've already used "Heh" recently as a title.)

Here's the "Heh": the current ad link at the top of my Gmail page is for a "how to kiss" site. Its slogan: "Double Your Dating."

My thought: That won't work. I'm not bi.*

* Per the Woody Allen quip "Bisexuality immediately doubles your chances for a date on a Saturday night." Which is a quip, NOT (based on what I've heard from people I know who are bi) necessarily truth!

Den-Idol Topic 0: Introductions

[Explain, I do: I'm unofficially trying my hand at therealljidol. I am NOT signed up as a possible-to-be-voted-out contestant, but I want to practice with at least some of the LJ Idol topics. This is the first. Well, technically, zeroth. P.S. My title "Den-Idol" is supposed to sound a little like "denied-ol." Oh, yes, I can overexplain.]

"Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose in life? What do I mean by 'who am I'?" So said the whale (in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy).

I quote. I ramble. I read. I'm random. I've written. I'm single. I'm relatively deep-voiced and sometimes do goofy things with that voice. I walk many, many places. I have a neat family. I have neat friends. I was an intense, overly serious kid and now I'm still intense but I try to be goofier. I probably owe much of the current shape of my life to Monty Python, Star Wars, Star Trek, Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman and Caitlin R. Kiernan. I'm a media geek: a former writer-reporter who tends to know lots of people in media. And I have a Van Dyke. (It's not a goatee! A goatee's just on the chin. A VanDyke is above and below the mouth!)

What else you wanna know? Some of it may be answered, either here or in late Den-Idol entries!
