Overly worried about jinxing things

And I know yesterday's post didn't say where I was road-tripping. I spent today in Eugene with my friend Alicia, helping her run errands and visiting with her. (She's The Former Significant Other, as I call her. There she is.) I realized at some level, I was worried about jinxing the trip by saying "Hey! I'm going on this trip!" It's the longest I've taken my car since last February, and the first such trip after getting work done on it, and I felt it was tempting fate to say where I was going in case my car didn't make it. Silly reason. Also makes for boring reading.

But my car ran fine, and Alicia's fine, and we visited well (ate well, too). The errands were a bust, but the conversation and random encounters with Interesting Stuff made it still worth it. Nice to feel more confident about the car, too. Which I'll now use to get groceries and dinner.

Mac 'n' cheese must always be spelled 'mac 'n' cheese.'

Somehow I've eaten more mac 'n' cheese as a thirty-something than I did in my entire childhood, teenhood, college-age, uh, -hood and 20s-adulthood.

We weren't a mac 'n' cheese family. Fish sticks, yes, circa 1980 (and how much food natural/unprocessed 'round then? Any? I'm sure I ate some salads back then, but I don't remember them), but even me and my also-finicky eater of a brother didn't eat it. Because Mom didn't get it. Our main pasta was spaghetti. It was good. Mac 'n' cheese was in our consciousness, I heard of kids eating it all the time, but that talk never led to me thinking Man, mac 'n' cheese sounds good, let alone asking for it. The name "Easy Mac" does not make my eyes roll back with remembered pleasure. I wonder if I missed some chunk of childhood by not having it.

But this decade of my life? Some mac 'n' cheese has entered my system. Like tonight. I needed groceries post-road trip and it was simplest to get something pre-prepared at Fred Meyer where I was shopping, and a big-ass container of Freddy's-prepared mac 'n' cheese was half-off. The power of REDUCED PRICE compelled me. I am now digesting said ma 'n' cheese. Plus some Quaker Oatmeal Squares because otherwise I'd probably not be getting enough fiber.

Now I'm wishing mac 'n' cheese occurred in the wild. Because I'm random like that. Bubbling pits of cheese, like bright-yellow La Brea, which dinosaurs (which, conveniently, taste like chicken) fall into, and then the whole mess is preserved to our time. Which, uh oh, would mean mac 'n' cheese ain't a renewable resource. Maybe THAT'S why I wasn't eating it!
