Placeholder No More!

Saturday involved me watching The Sound of Music for the first time and remembering what Douglas Adams once said: Rodgers and Hammerstein HAD to have wanted to write something else for the "La" line in "Do-Re-Mi." After all, "La -- a note to follow So" isn't on the same level as "Fa -- a long, long way to run" or "Tee -- a drink with jam and bread." It had to have been a placeholder lyric, the way "Yesterday" once began "Scrambled eggs -- oh my darling, how I love your legs" and the way "Sussudio" had the line "Su-su-su-sussudio" but the guy in Genesis couldn't think of a replacement, so they kept it. OK: what's the better line for this lyric? We haven't found it.

But it came to me. "La -- for saying 'Lah-Dee-Dah.'"

...except I can't imagine a nun saying "Lah-Dee-Dah."

This is harder than it looks.
