Dramatic wordage

James Thurber was a newspaperman. (I like that word. Kind of old-fashioned. Fits the era Thurber knew.) I just finished his 1952 essay collection The Thurber Album: a collection of pieces about people, with a few pieces commemorating news writers, editors and editorial cartoonists he knew, like Bob Ryder. Ryder got very wrapped up in that work. As Thurber put it, "his social life, like Carthage, had to go, on behalf of his dedication to the editorial page."

I hope Thurber was smiling when he wrote that.
