A poem tonight

"Needed Summer"
by Christopher Walsh, 5/13/2015-5/26/2015

A spring into needed summer: extra warmth and light to go around --
More directly reaching us, the ground, the sky, and
-- And everywhere
--------(this hemisphere, at least)
----------------(the gift of axial tilt).
Time to be more vivid. Greener, bluer...brighter.
The pollen to aid plant sex
--------(sorry about the sneezes)
Animals' coats shed, regrowing;
A more active everything.
A blanket, a little worn, on the finally-warm grass
On a slight rise: not much of a view; no beach in sight --
The best view is of the sky.
You think so, at least, right?
I notice you. You notice me, not seeing the sunblock
But the splotched, far-from-perfect skin it's on
And the wrinkled shorts and T that you don't know were salvaged
--------drawer-deep, musty but airing out and growing less musty
Like me.
I want to imagine, somewhere,
--------your drawers hold a "No Fat Chicks" shirt. Would fit.
--------In more ways than one.
Yes, a defensive thought: I've had experience. Many summers of it.
That I'm reading isn't enough to deter you from commenting
--------from cracking wannabe-wise
--------from being disparaging
--------from acting or maybe even being offended.
Can't tell. Don't want to tell.
Just me, just here, just -- finally -- and warmer.
And bolder.
I say, "The sun's looking at me, and it doesn't seem to mind."
