I listen

This didn't happen to me today, but it's on my mind.

I'm trying to get better at telling the difference between asking a question out of curiosity and asking a question just to say something. People on the street asking you something very often aren't really interested in your answer, they're setting up themselves to say a thing. Maybe they want to be clever, maybe they want to tease or mock you, maybe they want to make a point, but it's more about them, not about what you can say.

And I only SLIGHTLY deal with this because I'm not a woman getting questioned about so many things as she goes about her day. Which might be why it took a while for me to realize this.

This entry is brought to you by the finally-too-many times I've clearly and without a stutter answered a question and gotten a response of "What?" or "Huh?"
