I'm reminding myself of that (see? twice in only two lines) because today my family gets together for the memorial for my Grandma Dorothy. And come to think of it, we've had beautiful weather for all of the memorials my family has had, for my other grandparents.
Still, as you might understand, I remain in an odd head-space. Last night's post was seriously meant; I doubted I wanted to watch anything heavy. I eventually settled on two things: listening to the commentary on the Firefly episode "Shindig" (the ball, the duel, and Kaylee saying "Look at the pretties!") and watching WWE Smackdown! Smiling was a good idea last night. So was food indulgence: after getting home from work I drove to KFC (two pieces of chicken, plus the famous KFC Bowl ("Famous?" you're saying? Don't believe me? Go here and understand its fame) (or go here for another opinion, c/o coffeeinhell)) then to Safeway for a Stewart's Key Lime Soda. I also called my mom, who gave me updates: most of the family was able to make it, including Steph and her very young daughter Eloisa, but my cousin Neil was stranded on the East Coast due to weather.
Memorial things begin around 1 o'clock, with us converging on the cemetary in SE Portland where Dorothy's ashes will be added to a niche next to Grandpa Bob's. Then we go to a chapel for the memorial. (Bob and Dorothy had originally decided on a chapel on North Killingsworth, nearer their old neighborhood. We held Bob's memorial there, but in the years since, in a VERY Portland touch, it was converted into a McMenamin's pub. I think both Bob and Dorothy would appreciate that. So we're going to a different chapel.)
For now, I relax. Next I'll look through my photo albums for photos of Grandma Dorothy.
Meanwhile...hopeful thoughts, if you'd be kind enough, for the parents of shadesong. They are recovering from a car accident last night. Bruising is apparently the worst of it, but it could easily have been far worse.
