"U Stink (But I Love U)!"

Follow the bouncing brain...

So I'm listening to the radio this afternoon, and the Posies song "I May Hate You Sometimes" comes on, and what does it remind me of? Bloom County.

Let me explain.

Remember when Bill the Cat, Opus and others founded Billy and the Boingers (neé Deathtongue)? When the strips from that period were collected in a book (Billy and the Boingers Bootleg, the one with the cover parodying the Bruce Springsteen live box set and the back cover parodying U2's The Joshua Tree), the book included a floppy 7-inch disc that could go on a record player and play you two songs. And one of those reminded me of that Posies song.

The song I was reminded of was "U Stink (But I Love U)." (Actually there was a heart for "Love," but I don't know how to get that heart symbol thingy on my computer.) Here are the lyrics:

I hate the way you act, and I hate the way you smell
I hate the way you look girl, 'cause you just look like hell

You make me sick - Way Oh, Way Oh, Way Oh,
You make me sick, you really stink girl
You make me sick - Way Oh, Way Oh, Way Oh,
You make me sick, but I love you.

I hate your polyester pant-suits, and your greasy hair
And that stuff between your braces, and your hairy derierre

You make me sick - Way Oh, Way Oh, Way Oh,
You make me sick, you really stink girl
You make me sick - Way Oh, Way Oh, Way Oh,
You make me sick, but I love you

When I got you in my backseat, and I tried to make my move
I had to roll down all the windows to keep my face from turning blue

You make me sick - Way Oh, Way Oh, Way Oh,
You make me sick, you really stink girl
You make me sick - Way Oh, Way Oh, Way Oh,
You make me sick, but I love you

Idle Googling this evening led me to the band that was in fact singing that song on that flimsy disc. They're called Mucky Pup, and guess what? They're still around. They formed in 1985, won a songwriting contest in 1987 (thus, "U Stink (But I Love U)"), did well in Europe and survived into the Internet age we live in today. Neat.

(Oh, and the disc's other song "I'm a Boinger" was really by the Harry Pitts Band. And, no surprise, Wikipedia has a Billy and the Boingers page.)
