Dec. 7th, 1941

I once met a man who was at Pearl Harbor on Sunday, Dec. 7th, 1941.

I've listened to an eyewitness account of the attack. I wrote an article about the man and his account for the Hermiston Herald. I should dig out that article. It was one of my encounters with history.

Come to think of it, years before, in high school, I met a veteran who was among the first U.S. soldiers to reach Japan after we'd dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. One veteran of the start of the war, one veteran of the end of it. A kind of accidental symmetry, there.

To those who died, that day and in the three-and-a-half years that followed: we're doing our best to remember you.
