Take a trip to the scenic Uncanny Valley

Neil Gaiman was nice enough to link to a fascinating article about the recent wave of computer-generated human characters in films like Beowulf, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, The Polar Express (and explaining just what was so shudder-causing about that film) and, perhaps most intriguing, the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels. (Davy Jones!) It talks about what it takes to make us truly accept a digitally-created and digitally-manipulated character.

Now I'd like to see the writer's analysis applied to characters like Gollum and Max Headroom. (I wonder: how much of Max's look was effects-manipulation and how much of that was Matt Frewer's makeup?)
