Weekend for a friend. (Much nicer to have than a “Funeral For A Friend”…)

My friend Alicia took the train Saturday from Eugene to Portland. We ate a quick lunch and wandered downtown Portland, then saw MirrorMask (nicely dreamlike and funnier than I expected). I showed her my apartment, which she pronounced “cute,” plus she got bouncy-happy when I gave her an autographed copy of Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys.

Last night, I drove her to one of her family homes in Hillsboro, where she stayed the night. Our last highlight was shopping at Powell’s, where she treated herself to Eldest, the sequel to the dragon fantasy Eragon. Then lunch, snack shopping, and waiting at the train station.

Here’s how smooth I am, boys and girls: the highlight of that wait was my reading her a chapter of Moby Dick.

Betcha didn’t see that coming, did ya?
