Cleverness revealed in this quote from the piece: "To preserve the mysterious nature of the unnamed and largely unexplained creature, Tippett Studio revealed it only sparingly and in poses designed to disguise its anatomy as it navigated the skyscraper canyons of Manhattan." NOW I get it! The creature (which Cleo nicknamed "Darwin" because it eliminated some stupid people from the gene pool) first seemed to me to have that H.P. Lovecraft not-quite-symmetry to it, but actually it is symmetric -- just very, very ungainly.
(This is the second time today I've brought up the work of special effects 'mazing man Phil Tippett. Check out his studio's site and his Wikipedia page.)
