The Survivor fan in me, plus the part of me that recently read and enjoyed Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, appreciates this: A Eugene, Oregon reporter got lost on purpose with the cooperation of a local search-and-rescue crew.

With the pack fully loaded, Miller gave me advice on how long I could survive.

"You can last four seconds without your brain so you have to take care of that right up front," he told me. "Then there's four minutes without oxygen. Next is four hours without warmth, so we put a lot of focus on warmth. Then we can go four days without water and four weeks without food."
