As I just got reminded: Today is the 70th anniversary of Mercury Theatre On the Air's broadcast of War of the Worlds. Adaptation by future Casablanca scribe Howard Koch. Direction and narration by Orson Welles. Music arranged by future film composer Bernard Herrmann. And many very, very pissed-off radio listeners in its wake. (Years later my family and I were visiting my dad's parents, Irv and Jean, and someone mentioned Welles. Jean grumbled, in her "Bones" McCoy way, "Troublemaker.")
