A good life and good music: R.I.P., Maurice Jarre

Film composer Maurice Jarre has died at age 84.

He won Oscars and was hugely influential, from his '60s work (including the epics Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago) to his eclectic '80s work (his electronic scores to Witness and Dead Poets Society, the disturbed rumbling of Fatal Attraction, the apocalyptic insanity of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and maybe my favorite, the completely straightfaced and lovely music for the hilarious Top Secret!) to his hugely popular late-period score for 1990's Ghost.
